Residing under the moniker R.A.E (Rising Above Everything), the 90s fiend comes through with her debut 6-track self-titled EP, "R.A.E". Imagine if Lauryn Hill, Salt N Pepa & Sugar Hill Gang had a baby and birthed her in an era 20 years in the future, R.A.E doesn't just deliver on an authentic 90s sound, but also merges what it is to be a millennial Londoner living out her early 20s. Resonating on her sound, "I kept listening to 90's genres, so decided to pay homage to an era I absolutely love but as I'm from London, put a London twist on it." Having gone viral on social media in 2019 with a clip of her only second single "Damn Jermaine" the EP solidifies her ability to effortlessly spill strong narratives over boom-bap beats. Opening the EP, R.A.E introduces herself on 'Who Is She" while also similarly displaying her vocal ability on hooks through "Haters" and churning out empowering anthemic rhythms on "Melanin". Displaying an awareness of where she is heading through "Honesty Interlude", this is a touching moment showing her vulnerability and progressive approach to what Hip Hop & R&B looks like in 2019. Speaking on the intention behind her debut EP, "I want the listener to visually imagine exactly what is happening in the song, take it back to school days where we could literally create so many imaginary scenarios when playing with toys." It's R.A.E's ease in ability to create feel-good songs for a generation of young, excited and labelless people exploring life and having a plethora of stories to tell and relate to. R.A.E's ethos is rooted in achieving your dreams through self-expression... "It's not too late to chase your dreams, I've been dreaming about this day ever since I was born; I believe we are all destined for greatness, so this must be it." With her Spike-Lee Joint favouring aesthetic and sonic uniqueness that is undeniably rooted in Black Britishness and a love for the 90s; The triple threat of R.A.E. is truly Rising Above Everything.
