Smell the RosesSuburban Dark
Following on from their 2018 full length album Death From Below, Suburban Dark continue their unrelenting rate of attack with Smell The Roses - a grim and brooding 6-track release maintaining the dark and heavy ethos of the production duo while honing the focus of their violent sonic approach. The nightmarish visions are richer in detail and the Sydney boys' "Fight Beats" approach continues in full force. Chris Irvine (one half of the duo) describes its bleak underlying narrative: "Smell The Roses is in a similar vein to Death From Below, only it's set after the rebellion ... and we lost. It embodies a unifying stance of power from a position of having little to nothing." Focused on its brutal aggressive onslaught of beats, the EP admits only one guest feature - the ferocious Mathas. The Perth MC has a trail of his own accolades including WA Music Industry's coveted Song of the Year award (the first ever for a rap or electronic artist), a pile of Best Urban Act awards and countless album award nominations. His cadence laces the lead single/title track of the release as he paints the picture of a dystopian near-future. Suburban Dark's previous full-length releases, Death From Below and Second Front featured a host of Sydney's finest hip hop MCs from Jeswon and Tuka of Thundamentals, to underground MCs Grey Ghost and fellow Big Village MCs, P.Smurf, Rapaport and Ellesquire. Death From Below containing the crushingly massive 'Supernova' (featuring longtime collaborator Jeswon) and the hypnotic banger 'Remember Your Code' which enjoyed strong airplay; Second Front received outstanding reviews from Drum Media, FBi Radio and The Brag and garnered a Zan Rowe (Triple J) interview. Long considered the producer's 'producer' the 'Smell The Roses' EP firmly cements Suburban Dark as ones to watch, with their new work taking it to a whole new level. With a new full band setup created to manifest their powerful loud sound, Suburban Dark launch their new release on Saturday May 18th at the Chippo Hotel at 8pm with supports from Perth MC Mathas, Rapaport and Alchemist.
