Crowded Isolation - David Bray (And Friends)David Bray
DAVID BRAY: From his early work with Daniel Lanois (U2, Neil Young, Bob Dylan and Peter Gabriel), Eugene Martynec (Bruce Cockburn, Kensington Market & Murray McLauchlan) and John Capek (Marc Jordan and Ken Tobias) to his latest work with Garth Hudson of the Band, Motown's legendary bassist Bob Babbitt, Colin Linden, Jeff Healey, Kim Mitchell, and a host of other all-star musicians, David has emerged as one of Canada's most distinctive songwriters. His compelling lyrical flare combined with an ear for musical "hooks" make his music unmistakable. While David penned and produced all of the material, he shares vocal duties with performers best suited to each song, most notably his musical partner, Lorraine Reid, someone whose voice you won't soon forget. A decade of work has resulted in a trilogy of three separate releases (of which Night Rains was the first) ranging musically from Roots to contemporary R&B, focusing on a soul-searching examination of "Crowded Isolation" and the challenges of urban life. Along for the ride is an assortment of legendary musical friends as well as the best and brightest of today's talent. Dive in, sample the lyrics and find out more about the friends accompanying a writer who commands attention. CROWDED ISOLATION is a collection of short stories, conversations and observations set in the contemporary urban settlement that we call the city. In this collection the writer is a city dweller at once suffering the angst of the worst of urban living and a voyeur peeping into the lives of those who struggle to psychologically and socially survive. The lyrics speak to quality of life in the city of a million stories, where one can feel so isolated and alone despite the crowded streets and the commuter grid-locked in the cockpit of his automobile. Although the stories in this collection may at times seem dark by themselves, as a collection they actually convey hope and possibility. The genre of this Bray collection hearken back to the R&B and Soul days of Motown when lyrics came vocally dressed in sweet musical emotion and complexity of feelings when one could truly contemplate the words and imagine their source.
